Did you know that termites remain active throughout the year! It is important to ensure that you have your home protected and also make sure you’re not unknowingly inviting them onto your property.
After the cold winters, when the warmth comes back and the days start to get longer, we begin to spend much more time outside. This is the time you may notice the presence of termite attack, they were working the whole winter unaffected.
By carrying out a few of these simple tips regularly, you may help prevent them from causing unseen damage
- Repair Leaks
Termites love moisture and damp soils. Excess moisture caused from leaking pipework, air conditioning units and faucets can create the ideal environment for termites. Keep areas around your home dry. Ensure you have efficient ventilation in sub floor areas and that nowhere around your yard has excess water build up or pooling. Also make sure that all your guttering is connected up properly with all debris cleared to allow for correct runoff away from the building.
- Prevent Hidden Access Points into the building
Repair damaged Mortar around foundations and ensure that no soil or garden is built up against the house. A clear gap should be maintained around the exterior of the building for easy inspection. Keep all vents and weep holes clear to ensure there are no hidden entry points.
- Remove Timber in contact with the soil
Firewood should be stored away from the house and up off the ground if possible. As termites will dig through the soil in search for food leaving wood out is like a buffet for them. You should try maintain an 50cm gap from any timbers around your home or use termite resistant timbers.
- Monitor your Home
It is important for you to regularly inspect your property for any signs of termite attack. Look for things such as:
- Mud tubes which are constructed by termites to move around, unexposed to the elements
- Hollow sounding timbers when tapped
- Rippled paint
- Sunken flooring
- Wood powder
Keep an eye around your windows, door frames and skirting boards for any changes.
Regular Inspections
